What would I do with Baz? And Agatha? And Penny? I’d written so much about him through these other voices, and I kept thinking about what I’d do with him if he were in my story, instead of Cath’s or Gemma’s. I felt like I was finished with their story… I was able to let go of Cath and her boyfriend, Levi, and their world. I won't bother going over the finer plots points, since most of us have had to read it at some point in high school I'd rather focus on the film as its own entity. What do you get when you take a 4000-year-old play, which is divisive in its own right, and make a flaccid update for the MTV generation? You get "Romeo + Juliet", an embarrassing misfire from a talented cast and crew. Rating: PG-13 (Some Sensuality|Contemporary Violence)ĭTS, Dolby SR, Dolby Stereo, Surround, Dolby Digital, Dolby A Romeo attends the masked ball and he and Juliet fall in love. Her father Fulgencio Capulet (Paul Sorvino) has arranged her marriage to the boorish Paris (Paul Rudd) as part of a strategic investment plan. Juliet (Claire Danes) is attending a costume ball thrown by her parents. In this version, the Capulets and the Montagues are two rival gangs. Baz Luhrmann helped adapt this classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy for the screen, updating the setting to a post-modern city named Verona Beach. Second there were the so-called Lemon Tarts. They were social X-rays, to use the phrase that had bubbled up into Sherman’s own brain. This season no puffs, flounces, pleats, ruffles, bibs, bows, battings, scallops, laces, darts, or shirs on the bias were too extreme. To compensate for the concupiscence missing from their juiceless ribs and atrophied backsides, they turned to the dress designers. First there were women in their late thirties and in their forties and older (women ‘of a certain age’), all of them skin and bones (starved to near perfection). There were no men under thirty-five and precious few under forty. There were no solitary figures, no strays. “All the men and women in this hall were arranged in clusters, conversational bouquets, so to speak. Oh, the X-rays and the Lemon Tarts! I’d be annoyed on behalf of these women only I’m quite sure it’s all true. The description of this party goes on for several pages and is so totally and completely entertaining I can’t put the book down. I can’t resist sharing my delight in the prose of Tom Wolfe. Gellner nations and nationalism7/3/2023 In a modern nation, any attempts to create alternate educational structures (and thus separate types of people) will inevitably dissolve into the oceanic culture produced by the state educational apparatus. In practice it serves the purpose of manufacturing for the state the type of human being that fits its needs. This system is a lumbering, unconscionably expensive apparatus that can only be administered by an entity the size of a state. One of the key requirements for creating a nation is control of the education system. Appropriately, this is also the type of person its institutions produce. To put it simply the modern nation is characterized by homogeneity, anonymity and functional literacy. As defined by Gellner, the nation is a unit large enough to reproduce itself through education, ideologically bound to a single literate culture and consisting mostly of deracinated ("gelded"), interchangeable people who can be moved with little retraining between the various occupations demanded by society. Into this breach emerged what we call nationalism, which remains the system that the overwhelming majority of human beings live under today. The sudden emergence of industrial society required a new type of person as well as a new organizing principle to support itself. The dovekeepers7/3/2023 I am convinced I heard my father's roar of grief. I was taken from my mother's womb, cut out with a sharp knife. "In that moment the map of my life arose upon my skin in a burst of red marks. Yael is the daughter of a Sicarii assassin and a mother who died before giving birth to her. The women of the dovecote, each in her own way, violate Jewish laws. Unfolding in the years before the siege, the novel portrays Masada's occupiers as a contentious and diverse group, many of them embittered by grief. Not until 72 did the Roman army besiege Masada. Refugees from Jerusalem joined them after Romans destroyed the Second Temple in the year 70. Jewish rebels first came to Masada around 66 A.D. A strikingly different portrayal of the Siege of Masada, The Dovekeepers focuses on the lives of four fictional women, workers in the dovecote, among the Jews occupying Herod's abandoned fortress. The Obsidian by Janelle Wong7/2/2023 Through field excavations and laboratory analyses, this dissertation explores whether the change in material culture represents cultural continuity or cultural change at the Black Mountain site. It represents one of the largest Black Mountain phase settlements and also contains a large Cliff phase room block. The Black Mountain site (LA 49), near Deming, NM, in the Lower Mimbres Valley, is the type site for the Black Mountain phase. Three processes have been proposed to account for the changes: depopulation followed by population replacement (immigration), population decrease with remaining groups changing material culture and reorganizing economic and social networks, or some combination of these scenarios. The scale (size of the population reorganizations), chronology (timing of the reorganizations), and nature (social processes behind the reorganizations) of these changes are not fully understood. The second represents the transition from the Black Mountain to the Cliff phase (1300 to 1450 A.D.). The first represents the transition from the Classic Mimbres period (1000 to 1150 A.D.) to the Black Mountain phase (1150 to 1300 A.D.). These periods are marked by dramatic changes in material culture, settlement reorganization, and population decline. and again around 1300 A.D.) during the Postclassic Period. In the Mimbres region of southwestern New Mexico, there are two notable periods of transition (around 1150 A.D. Unhinged howard7/2/2023 “All he could do was move arms.
