At night all blood is black author7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() He and his companion are forced to adopt a veneer of savagery, a vestige Alfa begins to embrace after Mademba is mortally wounded. Unfortunately, he and his best friend, Mademba, are recruited for the French war effort against Germany. His early illustrations of violence in the novel are abrasive even when compared to most notorious contributions to realistic wartime fiction, but Diop skirts dwelling in such memory in favor of understanding the fractured life that inevitably follows.Īlfa is a young Senegalese man with academic aspirations outside of Africa. A recollection of late childhood and carnage, Diop’s prose is less of the fever dream sometimes associated with similarly grotesque subjects and more an organic, direct recount of destruction years at a remove à la Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence. Though David Diop anchors At Night All Blood Is Black in the plight of Senegal, the historical context of the novel is hushed by an examination of the psychological duality of conflict. IN THE BLOOD-MIRED trenches of World War I, an unwilling soldier ascends to an agent of death. ![]()

Creepy by Yutaka Maekawa7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() More chilling psychological thriller with brushstrokes of horror than straight horror, Creepy lives up to its name. Unsatisfied with his new career and a move to a quieter neighborhood in the suburbs with his wife, it doesn’t take much convincing from a former colleague to investigate a cold case that saw three family members disappear without a trace, leaving behind a shell-shocked daughter. He soon trades in his badge for a teaching job, however, when a young serial killer in custody breaks loose and he barely escapes with his life. The film opens with an introduction to Koichi Takakura (Hidetoshi Nishijima), a detective with a heavy interest in criminal psychology. ![]() It’s a return that brings the familiarity of Kurosawa’s methodical, atmospheric approach to horror, yet departs from the supernatural themes of his previous works. ![]() Based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Yutaka Maekawa, Creepy marks director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s return to the horror genre since Japanese horror classics Pulse and Cure. ![]() ![]() ![]() According to Gates, "to prevent the worst effects of climate change, we have to get to net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases. By investing in research, inventing new technologies, and by deploying them quickly at large scale, Gates believes climate change can be addressed in meaningful ways. ![]() As a technologist, he has seen firsthand how innovation can change the world. Climate change, according to Gates, will have the biggest impact on the people who have done the least to cause it. Gates says, "We can work on a local, national, and global level to build the technologies, businesses, and industries to avoid the worst impacts of climate change." His interest in climate change is a natural outgrowth of the efforts by his foundation to reduce poverty and disease. Bill Gates explains why he cares so deeply about climate change and what makes him optimistic that the world can avoid the most dire effects of the climate crisis. "Bill Gates shares what he's learned in more than a decade of studying climate change and investing in innovations to address the problems, and sets out a vision for how the world can build the tools it needs to get to zero greenhouse gas emissions. ![]() Hitchcock by françois truffaut7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() Truffaut, an up and coming filmmaker at the time, provides the viewer (or reader) a glimpse into what it would be like to interview the legendary filmmaker yourself. The film is based around a conversation between Hitchcock and Truffaut that took place in 1962. These commentators are certainly insightful, but you don't get enough from each of them to get full satisfaction. Director Kent Jones gathers several of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese, Richard Linklater, Peter Bogdanovich, and David Fincher, to discuss Hitchcock's influence on the art of cinema and some of his most effective features. Hitchcock/Truffaut is a fascinating look into several of Hitch's films, and even some of Truffaut's, even if it is a little too short to call it a full exploration. I knew a bit about Hitchcock, but I never dug deep into his archival footage or books written about him to understand the full psychology of the master of suspense. ![]() The success of documentary is usually based on how much you already know and how much you learn about the main subject of the film. ![]() Civil Wars by David Armitage7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() Professor Armitage observed that civil war is a recent field of study. Professor Armitage’s book is Civil Wars: A History in Ideas, which Professor Armitage acknowledged was inspired by Professor Dudziak’s book War Time: An Idea, Its History, Its Consequences. There was so much I loved about this book, but I really couldn’t stand Gile’s sister, who just drove me crazy for the entire book. Yasmin and Giles have to learn to speak to one another about their fears and dreams. OPINION: This book is so much more serious than the initial setup appeared to portend. Giles is too stuffy and judgemental, yet Yasmin finds that Giles constantly exceeds her expectations. Yasmin has a past and is determined to be strong in the face of the disapproval of British society and Giles. That makes her ineligible for consideration as his countess, but he can’t stop wanting to spend time with her.
